Visas

Getting a visa is the final step towards a global education in the UK. A visit to visa services may seem like a daunting prospect, but these fears are unfounded.

New UK visa application centers

In February 2003, the British High Commission introduced improved visa application facilities and procedures for its customers across India. Applying for a visa is now much easier, and applications for all categories of UK visas are accepted at these application centers.

The application centers are operated by Visa Facilitation Services (VFS), which is responsible for accepting applications and providing advice and guidance where necessary. All visa applications continue to be assessed by Entry Clearance Officers at the British High Commission and Deputy High Commissions.

What do you need to apply for a student visa?

A prospective student must have been accepted on a full-time course of study, which includes at least 15 hours per week of day time study at a bona fide college or university in the United Kingdom. You must have adequate funding available to pay all the associated expenses. In general terms, the student must demonstrate the ability to follow the studies, and an intention to do so and to leave the UK upon their completion. Students who complete courses at degree level or above can apply for work permit employment on graduation. Full details can be found on the UK visas website at www.ukvisas.gov.uk

What documents do I need to submit in order to obtain a visa?

You will need a letter confirming that you have been accepted onto the course, and evidence that you can pay for the studies and any extra living expenses, including accommodation. Please contact us for reliable visa guidance.

When should I apply for a student visa?

If your course starts in September, the best time to apply is July or August. If your course starts in January or February then it is best to apply in November or December.

Are all the students interviewed? Should I be worried if I am called for an interview?

No. All applications are lodged at visa application centers in India,

run by Visa Facilitation Services (VFS), who have 11 offices, throughout India. The applications are then assessed by the Entry Clearance Officers at British diplomatic missions. If the officer is satisfied at that stage that the student meets all the requirements of the Immigration Rules, then the visa will be issued without an interview. However, the fact that a student is asked to attend an interview does not necessarily mean that the application will be unsuccessful.

What kind of questions will be asked at the interview?

There is no definitive list of questions. The interviewing officer will have to be satisfied that the student meets the requirements of the Immigration Rules.

Are there different kinds of student visas?

There are variations for more specialised study, for example in the field of health care.

How long is the student visa applicable for, and how long can I stay?

The visa will be valid for the duration of the course, plus a couple of months to give students the opportunity to attend graduation ceremonies and to prepare for their departure. Visas permit students to remain in the UK until their conditions of entry expire.

What happens if I am unable to complete my course in the schedules time due to unforeseen circumstances?

Students can apply for extensions to their conditions from the Home Office in the United Kingdom. There is now a charge for this service.

Can anybody I know in the UK choose to sponsor me? Is it necessary for the person to be relative?

In theory anyone can act as a sponsor, but the entry clearance officer will assess whether or not the proposed sponsorship is credible. The closer the relative, the more plausible it is that they would be spending money on the student’s education. Should you have any queries or need support in this event then contact us and seek our help.

Why are some students denied a visa?

Students are denied a visa if they do not meet the requirements of the Immigration Rules. This will typically be because they have insufficient funding, the proposed studies are not credible in terms of the students academic record or background, or the entry clearance officer is not satisfied that the student is capable of the following the proposed course.
