Accomodation

Eight halls of residence are managed by a company called Jarvis UPP (University Partnership Programme) Nottingham Limited (referred to as Jarvis hereafter), part of the international facilities management group.

Jarvis UPP residences provide approximately 2,300 places for first year students. They may vary slightly in style and layout, but most of them are either recently refurbished or purpose built to provide a high standard of student accommodation. All
residences provide kitchens for your use, with cookers, microwaves, fridge-freezers, storage facilities, etc.

All residences are offered on a self-catering basis and refectory services are available on both campuses for lunchtime and evening meals during term-time, as well as snacks and drinks at other times of the day.

University accommodation remains a popular choice of accommodation, especially amongst first year students, offering a higher standard of service than the majority of private sector accommodation.

Cleaning

The university aims to provide a cleaning service for the communal areas of each residence. Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms and kitchen areas. Students should be aware that Jarvis cleaning staff will enter student bedrooms and communal areas to carry out cleaning duties on various days throughout the week. Other Jarvis personnel will require access to bedrooms from time to time to carry out maintenance, repairs, etc. It will not always be possible to provide any notice to the occupant prior to access being required; however, the occupant's privacy will be respected at all times.

Gas and Electricity

All Jarvis residences are centrally heated and have a supply of hot water; heating and lighting costs are included in the accommodation charge.

Linen and Laundry

Linen is not provided within the residences but should students wish to hire bedding, this service may be available in Jarvis residences (price details will be available at the time of acceptance of accommodation). Students' personal laundry is their own responsibility, however, coin operated launderette facilities are available in all Jarvis residences. THE AVAILABILITY OF A LAUNDERETTE DOES NOT FORM PART OF THE RESIDENCE FEE.

Telephones

Access to telephones is provided in all residences with many offering payphones within easy access of individual flats, enabling students to make or receive calls without having to leave their accommodation. Some residences have internal telephone lines in the bedrooms (payment for line rental and calls required). THE AVAILABILITY OF PAYPHONES IN JARVIS ACCOMMODATION DOES NOT FORM PART OF THE RESIDENCE FEE.

Security

Many of the residences provide security either through electronic entry systems and intercoms or cover by security staff.

Each residence has a management team consisting of a manager and an assistant manager in addition to a Warden appointed from the university's staff.

Additional Facilities

There are some rooms within Jarvis residences that are suitable for students with disabilities, although availability cannot be guaranteed. Disabled students should initially liaise with the Student Support Services.

Most Jarvis residences provide various vending machines on site for use by the students, in addition to some having a common area and the majority having a television for students' use. THESE ARE ADDITIONAL FEATURES AND DO NOT FORM PART OF THE RESIDENCE FEE.

University Managed Residences

The university manages around 300 bed-spaces on behalf of selected developers. The bulk of these bed-spaces are in schemes that are purpose-built or renovated to the highest specifications in association with the Environmental Health Service. They are let on extended leases and directly managed by university staff from the central office. Unlike the Jarvis residences, there are no management staff on site. Obviously there is a greater onus on the resident, therefore, to take more responsibility for their own day-to-day living arrangements. However, the management team in the central office is available during office hours to give advice and assistance. Students also have access to the university's 24-hour security services should the need arise.

The university also owns approximately 250 bed-spaces between the City and Clifton campuses that are managed on a similar basis from the Student Accommodation Services offices.

The Accommodation

The accommodation typically comprises six-bed units with shared facilities in houses or flats. All units are centrally heated. Students have their own furnished room that has a secure lock.

The accommodation conforms to the highest standards of fire and gas safety.

The majority of properties are in good proximity to the city campus that means they are largely in inner-city areas where students form a significant proportion of the community.

International students are given priority during their first year of study at the university. As a part of our services each student enrolling for the NTU courses from our office, we make it our responsibility to ensure that they find a quality accommodation.
