Budgeting your studies

The key to survive is to plan ahead. You can prevent financial crisis occurring to you by drawing up a budget. First a warning: you should stick to it. It is a good idea to have a reserve fund always for any unexpected expenditure.

Your first few days when you arrive in the UK and last few days before the end of your course will have much expenses. During first few days, you will need to pay for internal travel, temporary accommodation, deposits, police registration, kitchen utensils, beddings, etc and during last few days before the end of your course, you will need to pay for shipping of things, graduation ceremonies, farewell parties etc. Don't be afraid: these are either temporary or one-time expenses.

The various expenses discussed above can be divided as: essential and optional. Accommodation, food, washing clothes, personal hygiene are usually classified as essential expenditures while others are optional expenditures.

Work out how much money you will need for essential expenditures and how much money you will receive. Items on the receiving side are:

  • The money you 'must' take to cover your living expenses (as per visa conditions - £6500 for each year of study or the amount quoted by your institution in the offer letter)
  • Your savings
  • Income from part-time work during term days and full time work during holidays

Remember you should be realistic in your calculations. Do not think that you can bring less and that you can manage. There are no sources of financial sponsorship once you are in the UK. To avoid any unnecessary hardships, you should not overestimate your receiving (particularly the supplement income from part-time work) and underestimate your essential expenditures.

Don't keep your budget fixed. Review it at least for once in three months. If there is any large unexpected expenditure, you may need to rebudget and change your lifestyle, so as to ensure you will have enough money throughout the length of your course.
