Career Development Office (CDO)

Career Counselling
A great deal of professional staff time is devoted to individual and group career counselling. The Principal, Ron Hilvert; Dean, Ian Senior; and other faculty Career Consultants are experienced Hospitality and Tourism professionals who are prepared to provide guidance in resume review, job-search strategy, interviewing skills development, and reference selection. These professionals can be a valuable resource during periods of critical job-search decision-making. Individualized career counselling for the purpose of determining career objectives also is available. This process may involve self-assessment, career testing, and an exploration of alternative career options.

Workshop and Seminar Programmes
Small group workshop programmes are offered to Academy students throughout the academic year, and are publicized through the Intranet. These programmes are generally offered by the CDO or Jumeirah International professional staff and academics, and focus on developing proficiency in the "basic tools" of the job search process, i.e.; career opportunities, resume writing, interviewing, and job-search strategy.

Resource Library
The CDO maintains a collection of reference books specific to the tourism and hospitality job search process. These books, along with employer informational files, are located in the Resource Library.

Announcements of Job Vacancies and Placement opportunities (Job-Postings on-line)

The job postings on-line holds current position-vacancy announcements. These notices are received by the CDO either through direct phone calls or by letters from employers, and are entered on the Intranet.

Mock Interview Programme
The purpose of the Mock Interview Programme is to aid students in developing sharp interview skills by placing them in a simulated interview situation. Mock interviews with career consultants are available for students throughout the year. In addition, 20-minute interviews are conducted by local industry professionals who are proficient in this practice. These interviews may be videotaped. Students, under the guidance of a career consultant, review their taped session in order to gain insight into personal style and interview strengths and/or weaknesses, and to develop new strategies for improving individual interview techniques.

Annual Career Forum
the Academy organises an annual career fair where industry partners can present their organization and select students for initial informal interviews.
